Happy Declination

Project-based learning about Croatian language declination

Nouns are declined into seven cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, locative and instrumental. In order to make the meaning of this abstract language clearer, Croatian language acquisition students have been exposed to different engaging activities that get them thinking. We have posed the specific case essential question that has been driving the project.

Nominativ: Jezici su mostovi... - introducing the idea
Genitiv: Valentinovo je, a nje/njega nema... - Valentine card
Dativ: Oda jeziku (Poetry writing featuring Mother tongue day)

Akuzativ: Moja domovina ima... - brochures

Lokativ: Maskare u Gupcu - invitation cards

Instrumental: Putujte s nama! - touristic slogans

Our last "challenge to be or not to be" is Vokativ.

During these mini-projects the students were encouraged to use the Croatian language as much as possible.

However, there was the moment where students needed to communicate or process new information in their native language and that was a great experience for everybody.
